Wood engraving is a subset of woodcut printing. In wood engraving, it is the end grain of the wood that is cut, as opposed to the side grain used in standard woodcuts. Close-grained hardwoods like maple and boxwood are best for this purpose.
A drawing is first done, full size for the finished print. This is then transferred to the wood block. Everything not intended to print is cut away with gravers similar to those used in copper engraving. It is a meticulous, time-consuming method that can render great detail. When cutting is finished, the block is mounted in a press and a proof print is pulled. The block is then returned to the bench for any touchup work that might be necessary. When all is good, the edition is printed. My engravings are usually done on maple blocks from my own drawings. These drawings are based on photographs that I have taken, primarily of industrial and architectural subjects, for the express purpose of being subjects for the engravings. Below are some examples of my work. All prints are numbered and signed. Most are available for purchase. Click here for purchase information. |
